Whole30 - Hung Jury

Well, I made it.  Shockingly enough.  For 30 days, I ate no grains, dairy, alcohol, soy, corn, potatoes, preservatives/additives, gluten, sugar, or God knows what else.  I have cooked and cleaned more in that 30 days than ever before as well.  My absolute biggest complaint has become the damn tupperware.  Being a good green little girl (and how sure how else I would do it….), I’ve cooked and packed all my meals/leftovers/portions in tupperware for storage in the fridge or freezer and for transport to work.  Due to the higher amount of fat in the food, said tupperware cannot simply be handwashed and left to dry – it all has to go into the dishwasher.  However, my dishwasher sucks for 2 reasons.  First, it does a crappy job of washing, so I have to clean every dish that goes in completely before putting it in (but the steam/heat of the dishwasher is the only thing that fully removes the grease).  S...

Day 14 Update

Shockingly, I've made it two weeks now on the Whole30 plan.  That means I have not had one morsel of dairy, grains, sugar, alcohol, and who knows what else.  People keep asking if I feel different, and so far I definitely haven't had that "ah ha!" moment.  Perhaps I feel marginally better during the day, but definitely nothing drastic.  I also do not notice much different in my sleep as is promised with the plan.  On the other hand, though, I am not really thinking about food all the time and I still get hungry but not the omg I'm going to die hungry I used to get. I made a spaghetti squash and some ground beef last week and that with Central Market Organic Pasta Sauce was definitely my favorite meal for the week.  I also discovered Applegate Farms "little smokies" at Whole Foods that are compliant.  I'm close to heaven with those as they taste good.  So I would say scrambled eggs and little sausages was my close second favorite meal.  I'm ...

Whole30, Day 5 Check-In

Day 2 - Wednesday Breakfast: egg/chorizo/avocado/onion/pepper/spinach casserole Lunch: turkey meatloaf (made with ground turkey breast, onions, celery, carrots, and central market organic pasta sauce), mashed sweet potatoes with cinnamon Snack: cashews and raisins (good combination!) Dinner: really don't remember?! Wednesday's workout was my usual PAC Brick downtown - we rode for ~40 minutes and ran about 2.5 miles with a stop at Blues on the Green in the middle.  I felt pretty normal through the day and my workout.  Normal being I could hardly keep my eyes open come 5:30 and it took every bone in my body to get to the 7pm workout.  I feel that way most Wednesday evenings though, so no real surprise or noticeable difference there. Day 3 - Thursday Pre run - 1/8 cup cashews Post run - 1 hard boiled egg Breakfast - 3 bard boiled eggs and a banana Lunch - turkey meatloaf and an apple Snack - 1/8 cup cashews Dinner - egg casserole Thursday morning's ...

Whole30, Day 1 - Still alive...so far

Well, it is possible I ate "cleaner" today than I ever have before and I appeared to live through it.  There are still a few more hours in the day, so death is still possible.  I may die of work in the kitchen.  Gees.  Baking is my thing...not cooking. Here's a rundown of what today looked like: 6:30 - pre-workout meal: scrambled egg with 1/4 avocado and salsa 8:00 - post-workout protein "bonus meal": 1 hard boiled egg 9:00 - breakfast: 2 hard boiled eggs and a banana 1:00 - lunch: 6oz tuna fish mixed with spinach, homemade mayo, and a little apple; one medium apple 7:15 - snack while leaving Whole Foods - was really really sinking: 1 box organic raisins 8:00 - dinner: 1 link Jenny O turkey sausage,  1/2 sweet potato mashed with a splash of coconut milk, evoo, and cinnamon That was exhausting! I went to HEB last night and spent $104 stocking up on some perishables as well as some stuff that will last quite a while.  I made mayo per the recipe i...

It Starts With Food

I'm about halfway through reading a book called "It Starts With Food."  The first point in the book is food is either good for you or bad for you...and that there is no in between.  It continues to describe their "good food standards" which include: 1.  Food should promote a healthy psychological response 2.  Food should promote a healthy hormonal response 3.  Food should support a healthy gut. 4.  Food should support immune function and minimize inflammation. The book continues to describe each standard in more detail and then describe how these standards apply to food that is good for you and food that is bad for you.  The unfortunate news is I think it is dead on.  Unfortunate because it pretty much catches me red-handed over and over again with my eating habits.  The good news...or not really good...but maybe somewhat reassuring...but not reassuring at the same time...is that, according to the book, we don't have much of...

My New Friend

I made a new friend last weekend.  His name is Billy.  Billy was in town with approximately 70 other athletes from around the nation to compete in a triathlon Monday morning.  This race consisted of the traditional swim, bike, and run that other triathlons consist of; however, this one had a few extra "obstacles" or "events" thrown in as well.  These events may have included one-armed swimming, one-legged stair climbing, adding and/or removing extra equipment not usually used by triathletes, and many other unconventional "tasks."  You see, Billy was in Austin to compete at the US Paratriathlon Championships.  "Paratriathlon?" you may ask.  Yes, paratriathlon: competing in the sport of triathlon as a disabled, or physically-challenged athlete.  Each of the 70 or so athletes were competing with disabilities ranging from multiple amputations to blindness. The Paratri championships were held in conjunction with the CapTex triathlon, a staple in the ...
