Apparently a tornado came along and picked all of us up in Brookshire, TX at 7:30 this morning and dumped us on the Ironman Arizona course. Wow. Windy is an understatement. Holy cow. Liam said he almost ended up in the Brazos river. I had to pedal downhill to make sure I didn't get blown back uphill backwards. My arms are even tired from holding my car straight down I-10 on the way home.
Despite the awful winds that were present from the absolute start of the ride, I did what I set out to do today: 100 miles, come hell or high water (or tornado). I rode all but about 7 miles of the ride entirely by myself, but I'm getting better at that. It didn't seem to bother me, especially when I grabbed my music for the last 25 miles. Our group started out quite large and ended up not so large as people were dropping left and right. I personally don't blame them and think they are probably smarter than I, but I was too stubborn to not make 100 miles. Looking at weather reports, the winds were 20-25 mph sustained while we were out there, with gusts to 30mph. Ugh. But, I made it, and I'm glad I did. As awful as the wind was, I had a great ride and a great day. As it started to rain I thought of my mom and how she used to make me sit with her on the back porch during storms and ask if I could smell the rain. I always thought she was crazy and was scared to death of thunderstorms, but today I could smell the rain, for the first time in forever. Also the smell of fresh cut grass reminded me Spring is certainly in the air.
Also good is that I even ran 2 whole miles after the ride. The best part of the day was that I made "mile 70 brownies" for everyone and got to eat them the rest of the day. Or maybe the best part was the $5 pizza buffet afterwards. Hmmm...no, brownies were better. The pizza wasn't that great, cheap, but not great.
Check out the picture I stole from Liam. Perhaps the wind gods would have been nicer to us had we joined the cowboys at Cowboy Church.

It looks like the weather really was awful here this weekend. Great job on sticking tough in that wind. The wind is your friend and it makes you Ironman strong!
Way to go!
