So...the forecasts aren't looking so hot for Tempe. Or rather they are looking VERY hot. We're talking highs around 95-97. Wow. I've never run in temps that hot. I guess there is a first time for everything!!
I have developed 5 proven strategies for beating the heat come race day:
1. Wear a full length white monotard (note: not unitard, but monotard). I'm sure we have an old one from ballet somewhere in a closet in Beaumont
2. Pull a Michael Jackson/Sindballe Torbjorn and wear 1 glove (white of course) and put ice down the glove
3. Accidentally fall into Tempe Town Lake a few times on the run. The water temp is running around 68 right now.
4. Spend Friday and Saturday in Flagstaff - apparently it is snowing there. Do people freeze and thaw the same way that water bottles do? I'm going to try it and hope I take over 13 hours to completely thaw.
5. Hire someone to bike and run next to me with an umbrella, like a cabana boy. Everyone has recommended that I stay in the shade during the race. This is the only solution I have found to be in the shade in the middle of a freakin' desert!
I think it is a good thing the race is nearing. My exercise-induced ADD is getting pretty bad. We had to do a lot of backstroke with paddles on this morning at masters swim and it drove me about crazy. I got out at the perfect time too - they were about to do breaststroke drills. NOT interested at this moment!!
Yesterday as the excitement finally hit me, I was also overcome with tons of positive energy. I have told myself there are to be no negative thoughts about the race from now on. No matter what. So, it is going to be hot. That's ok. I will deal with it. At least I won't run the risk of getting blown off my bike or getting hit by tumbleweed like I did last year. I'm prepared and I'm excited to see how far I've come in one short year.

Good luck!!
Bob.
Don't be temped to "Bedazzle" them because you will get the sun and heat reflecting off of all of those spangles. Also, you might blind people and cause them to crash their bike.
Now that would provide comic relief at the turn-around on loop three of the bike, HA!
