Sunday was my first-ever duathlon. I thought it may be my last before I even entered, and I may be right. I will not outright say "never again" but I'm also not jumping at the gun to do another. I prefer races that start in the water, not on dry land!
The race consisted of a 3 mile run, a 15 mile bike, and another 3 mile run. The bike course was three 5-mile loops. Each loop had six or seven 90 degree turns, so it was not exactly a "fast course." Not that I would have been exactly "fast" anyway, but you get the point.
It is hard to know how to pace your first run - someone said take the first mile 30 seconds slower than you can go, someone else said take the whole first run at a pace 30 seconds slower than you think you should go. I have no idea how fast (or slow) I can go right now, so that didn't help much either. I did manage to run my second run faster than my first, which many people do not do, so I guess I can at least say I was conservative enough on my first run.
All in all, it was still a fun day and I guess you call it a speed workout of sorts. It was fun to see great showings by both Houston Racing Triathlon Club and the Shama Cycles team.

And an event with a name like that just calls out for inappropriate comments. Lycra-inspired fanny comment withheld.
